American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)

The American Physical Therapy Association began as the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association that was established in 1921. Mary McMillan was the first president of the organization and presided over its 274 chapters. During the 1930s, men gained membership and the name was changed to the American Physiotherapy Association. Later the name was changed again to reflect what the association’s title is currently. Membership has grown from an estimated 1,000 in the 1930s to almost 66,000. The APTA seeks to advance the knowledge and education of physical therapy.
